Remodeling Show Heads Back East
Although the remodeling business has not seen the dramatic declines experienced in new construction, window and door manufacturers and dealers serving this market are likely to be looking for signs of a rebound in this segment when the Remodeling Show opens in Baltimore in September. The event returns to familiar ground this year, moving back east after what many considered a successful first foray west last year.
Installation clinics are a staple on the Remodeling Show floor.
Scheduled for September 10 through 12 at the Baltimore Convention Center, the event is expected to gather several hundred exhibitors, including numerous window and door manufacturers. Last year, it drew over 7,500 attendees in Las Vegas. Previously alternating between East Coast and Midwest locations, Remodeling Show attendance topped 10,000 for the first time in Chicago in 2006, reports organizer Hanley Wood Exhibitions.
Despite lower attendance in Las Vegas last year, the mood was upbeat with many exhibitors expressing satisfaction that the remodeling and replacement segment of the business was holding its own. "The remodelers we're talking to here are all busy," reported Ralph Pfieffer of Great Lakes Window at last year's show. "People are fixing up their homes."
A number of vinyl replacement window manufacturers that traditionally exhibit at the Remodeling Show didn't make the trip to Las Vegas last year. One result of that was greater prominence for fiberglass and wood windows and doors. Plastpro and Therma Tru each displayed a wide variety of styles and colors of fiberglass entry doors.
Milgard Windows & Doors introduced a new mahogany version of its door at the show, and was also showing both its wood-clad version and its all fiberglass Ultra product. The performance features of the line, together with the growing desire of many dealers to offer something different than vinyl has made fiberglass "a real growth business for us," said the company's Jim Sheehan.
Marvin Windows featured both its wood line and the Integrity line, and also reported continued growth with fiberglass products. Although it wasn't showing its Infinity replacement line, the company's Tom Goldsmith noted that business has been expanding with a steady addition of new dealers around the country that "want to break out of the vinyl pack."
The list of exhibitors for Baltimore features many of the largest window and door manufacturers—including Andersen, Marvin, Masonite, Peachtree and Pella. Also prominent are manufacturers of sunrooms and patio enclosures and regional vinyl window manufacturers, such as Ideal Manufacturing, Sunrise Windows and Vytex.
One of the more interesting new products launched at the Remodeling Show last year was a motorized louvered roof for patios and decks.
The list of exhibitors covers many more product categories, and once again Hanley-Wood is making an extra effort this year to boost kitchen and bath related activity at the event. These efforts include a special showcase on the show floor, as well as numerous educational sessions that will be part of the conference held in conjunction with the show. On-floor installation clinics, another regular feature at the Remodeling Show, will focus on green construction practices this year.
The Remodeling Show educational conference kicks off September 9. The exhibition itself runs from September 10-12, with the exhibit hall open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday.
