Will Home Star be a Positive?
Home Star took another step forward last week. I can’t say I’ve heard a lot of enthusiastic endorsements of the program from our industry, but there seems to be general support. Given the current state of our market, it’s hard to argue against a program that could stimulate more window and door sales.
Home Star comes with some baggage, however. It’s not clear what criteria a window or door installer might have to meet under such a program. Both the House and Senate versions of the bill also create a somewhat of a mandate for certified “home performance” companies—energy efficiency retrofitters. That’s raised some concerns at the Air Conditioning Contractors of America, among others.
So how are you feeling about Home Star? That’s our poll question of the week. I offer my take on some of the potential implications in my August editorial, but I’d like to hear your thoughts about Home Star’s potential impact. Will the incentives encourage homeowners to upgrade their homes? Will rebates spur purchases of windows and doors specifically? Are you worried about how rebates will be handled? Do you see Home Star affecting some companies negatively? Email me and let me know what you’re thinking.
