President Devon Tilly describes Mountain View Window & Door as “the Mercedes dealership for windows, doors and hardware.” Tilly bought the business in 2012 and has since grown the company from five employees to more than 15, converted to an all-digital system, opened a second location, and created a podcast and TV show. MVWD caters to builders and architects with its portfolio and showroom, but has also distinguished itself in this market with a bi-weekly podcast for construction industry professionals. “The Art of Construction” is tailored to a specific audience of contractors and architects with the intent of helping them grow their businesses. Listeners tune in while driving “from site to site,” according to one review, and get an understanding of “how professionals can learn to work more effectively together,” says another reviewer, who concludes, “it’s a win-win.”
The podcast combines personality and levity—discussing beverages-of-choice and personal passions, for example—with insightful and practical takeaways, such as revealing pain points and secrets to success. Tilly and sales manager Kevin Keefe have “fireside chats” with architects, authors, general contractors and marketing professionals, among others, who share perspectives and strategies, and collectively move MVWD toward its goal of “bringing the entire construction industry together.” This is a big sticking point with listeners, one noting that Tilly and Keefe “are promoting collaboration [that] has been missing in most of the industry.”

Tilly has done an excellent job of leveraging all different mediums to reach MVWD’s audience. He promotes products through MVTV, Mountain View Television, a series of informational videos broadcast on the MVWD website as well as on its YouTube channel. The bi-monthly shows for architects, contractors and designers address on-site challenges, explore new products and provide how-tos.

Technology integration is embraced internally at MVWD as well. The company has an in-house IT specialist, a necessary position for an all-digital company. In 2015, MVWD selected a software program and then manipulated it to fit the specific needs for customer management and purchase orders. “The result is a highly sophisticated technological tool that makes business easy and efficient for staff and clients,” the company’s nomination states. This move demonstrates the forward-thinking nature of the company, building an infrastructure for future growth.
