Today I join you from Shanghai—gotta love technology!

Last week I took the industry’s pulse to see how many of our industry readers have been to China for business. While more than half of you have never stood where I now stand, about 29 percent have gone at least once. The emails poured in last week after I asked for travel tips, and one gentleman in particular has earned himself several beers from me for the information on getting through customs with brand name purses. I am indebted.

I heard that many of the business customs and etiquette I’ve been trained on prior to the trip don’t necessarily stand among Chinese businesspeople. One reader told me Shanghai is a lot more like San Francisco than what I’d consider “China.” So while I’m open to the experience and learning as I go—being cautious and considerate of local customs—I’m also more wary of sweeping stereotypes.

So it’s early in the trip yet, but I’m learning a lot as I go.
