AMD's exhibition has reflected door industry trends with an expanding range of door styles and options on display.

Several innovative new products were debuted last year at the Association of Millwork Distributors' annual exhibition in Denver. The leading showcase for the door industry moves to Florida this year, running Oct. 13-15 at the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center in Kissimmee.

The theme for AMD's annual convention, which kicks off Oct. 11, is "Knowledge Under the Palms." Last year, AMD introduced an expanded educational program and new initiatives designed to attract more attendees to the event, and once again, this year's convention will feature some new plans.

The exhibition will feature displays from nearly 100 suppliers. Last year saw several noteworthy introductions, including Highmark Digital's One-Cut System targeting the replacement door market. The company showed its JambScan door imaging unit, which measures existing door openings and then provides data to a CNC machine that preps a door slab to be hung in the existing frame. The Amesbury Group offered a "sneak peek" at its new Locca line of electronic locks in Denver too. The hardware allows a homeowner to simply press a button on a remote and push open a door without fumbling with a key or the door knob. Also featuring new electronics in its line was ODL. The supplier was showing a new motorized version of its internal miniblind doorlites.

Reflecting the continued drive in the door market toward new design options and components offering lower maintenance, Craftmaster Manufacturing was launching a new interior Shaker-style three-panel door offering a look more akin to MDF doors at a significantly lower price point. G-M Wood Products was showing new DuraFrame jambs, which use rot- and moisture-resistant Alaskan yellow cypress at the bottom, while EverMark was showing new fiberglass-clad door jambs designed for use with fiberglass entry doors.

This year's exhibition will once again feature many of the largest producers of interior and exterior doors, including Masonite, Plastpro, Simpon Door, Steves & Sons and Therma-Tru. The full list of exhibitors, which appears on page 78, also includes producers of high-end wood doors, suppliers of doorlites and other door components, manufacturers of pre-hanging and other door processing equipment, mouldings and trim, windows and other products.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM
AMD has steadily increased the educational opportunities available at its annual convention over the past few years. This year's program includes a full-day of sessions on Sunday, Oct. 12. Russell E. Taylor of the International Wood Markets Group kicks the program off with a look at moulding and millwork trends around the world. He will examine both potential markets for exporters and developments that may impact sources of imports. Don Carr will follow with a presentation focusing on the new National Green Building Standard developed by the National Association of Home Builders and International Code Council. He will offer details on the program requirements as well as NAHB's Green Verification process which will be used by builders. The morning will conclude with Don A. Rice, a consultant in the distribution field, offering a session entitled "Are You Making 30% On Your Money?"

Afternoon presenters include Michael Schatzki, who will offer a seminar designed to help businessman improve negotiation skills, and D. Bruce Merrifield Jr., who will look at the benefits of activity based costing. Erik Belsky of the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University will finish up the day, offering his short- and long-term forecast for the U.S. housing market.

This year, AMD is introducing a new program to bring younger employees from its member companies to its annual event. The Generation Next program-which includes a special luncheon featuring John Moore, a one-time top executive with Starbucks and Whole Foods-offers free convention registration for AMD member company employees age 21 to 35.

The featured speaker at the official opening session for the convention is former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who will offer his insights into the November election. Other events on the convention program include the return of the Icebreakers cocktail reception following the education day, as well as the new AMD Bowl, a tailgate style party that will kick-off activities on Saturday, October 11. The event will also feature a final party-featuring Cirque Odyssey-on the evening of Wednesday, October 15.
