Millwork Distributors Heading to Nashville

AMD event strengthening with more door makers exhibiting again

Slightly delayed, the Association of Millwork Distributors is heading to Nashville for its 47th annual convention and exhibition next week. Set for the Nashville Convention Center and the Renaissance Nashville Hotel, this year’s event will once again feature a refined scheduled with one day focused on education, followed by two days of the trade show, and organizers are reporting an optimistic tone.

The AMD show gathers many manufacturers of interior and exterior doors, as well as component suppliers.

The Tennessee event, scheduled for October 23-27, is slightly delayed because AMD originally planned to go to the Gaylord Opryland Resort in 2010. Spring flood damage to that property necessitated a change in venue, however, so the organization moved to Charlotte, N.C., last year instead. Despite such challenges, this event has enjoyed somewhat of a resurgence over the past two years, with a busier trade show floor both in Charlotte last year and in San Antonio in 2009.

The theme for the 2011 event is Opening Doors for Millwork Opportunities, reflecting an increase in the number of door manufacturers exhibiting at the show. Last year saw the AMD debut of Tru Tech Doors, a Canadian producer of steel and fiberglass products "ready to take on the U.S. market."  It also saw the return of Masonite to the show.  This year, door manufacturers returning to exhibit include Krosswood Doors, Plastpro and Signamark.

They will join a strong roster of wood door makers, including Buffelen Woodworking, Combination Door, Evermark, Karona, Simpson Door, Steves & Sons and Woodgrain Millwork. Fiberglass will be prominent in the booths of Right Concept and Therma-Tru.  A mix of both will be evident at GlassCraft Doors, a long-time producer of hardwood doors that launched a fiberglass line last year.

In addition to doors, multipoint lock systems are likely to be prevalent in Nashville. Joining Endura Products and W&F Manufacturing, which featured such products at this show last year, are Imperial Products by Homeshield and Generation 4 Sales, each introducing new lines in Charlotte.

Education Program
Before the show opens, AMD will offer a day-long education program, kicking off with a session led by Bob DeStefano, an online marketing specialist who will talk about reaching customers through social media. He will be followed by Paul Winans, a long-time remodeler and now a consultant with Remodelers Advantage. He will focus on opportunities in the remodeling market, focusing on the importance of building relationships with remodelers.

Next on the agenda is Jessica Ferris, AMD director of codes and standards, who will provide an update on the current status of AMD’s structural standard for side-hinged exterior door systems (SHEDS), as well as information about the organization's certification program. She will also provide an overview of the Energy Star program and give an update on the proposed 2013 qualification criteria revisions and how those proposed revisions could impact the millwork industry.

Rodger Bayne, an insurance industry executive, will provide an overview on the recent health reform legislation and how it impacts businesses, as well as new rules for employee health plans. The day will conclude with a presentation from John N. Meeks, a top executive at McCoy Building Supply based in San Marcos, Texas.  In addition to finance and acquisition activity for the company, he is responsible for the company’s two millwork operations which supply pre-hung door units to the company’s 84 retail locations. His talk will focus on making business and personal financial decisions in today's economic environment.

The convention will include a cocktail reception Monday evening, several business meetings and an official opening event on Tuesday morning before the show opens. Offering the keynote address at that event will be Joe Calloway, a branding consultant and author of Becoming A Category Of One.
