  • Many of us in the window and door business would consider ourselves part of the home improvement industry. But what about the “home performance” industry? My guess is that a lot of us have probably never even heard that term. Home performance deserves our attention, however. Home performance contractors are energy efficient retrofitters. They don’t just sell siding or HVAC... more »
  • Home Star took another step forward last week. I can’t say I’ve heard a lot of enthusiastic endorsements of the program from our industry, but there seems to be general support. Given the current state of our market, it’s hard to argue against a program that could stimulate more window and door sales. Home Star comes with some baggage, however. It’s not clear what criteria... more »
  • Manufacturers and extruders suggest some movement toward larger openings too.
Homeowners want energy efficiency. They want designer options. Priorities in the vinyl patio door market are not too different than they are in the vinyl windows, manuafcturers and suppliers agree. There are a few trends unique to vinyl doors, however, including some movement toward larger openings. “We're seeing that energy efficiency is very high on the list for both windows and doors,... more »
  • I think most people who know me well would categorize me as a pretty upbeat person. I'm quite optimistic and I look for the upside and growth opportunities in not-so-fun situations, including the rocky economic road we've traveled the last couple of years. The report foresees gains through 2013, when industry sales will near pre-housing crisis levels.   Prepared by Ducker Worldwide, the AAMA/WDMA 2009/2010 U.S.... more »

At the midpoint of 2010, a look at the dashboard is encouraging: After shrinking 2.4 percent in 2009 (the most since 1946), gross domestic... more »

  • With Fourth of July coming up, we're at the halfway point for 2010.  While unbridled optimism is hard to find, most people in the industry I talk to say things are getting better.  I thought it would be a good time to see where we're at.  So this week's poll question asks how you expect your 2010 will compare with 2009.  Of course I'd like to hear from you.  What do you... more »
  • Manufacturers and suppliers see new opportunities for tilt/turn and other imported styles
They tilt and turn, they lift and slide, and they represent a growing market opportunity for North American window and door companies, according to many. After finding only limited acceptance for decades, European-style window and door systems have seen growing demand in the past several years. That growth, in turn, is encouraging more companies to focus their efforts on these products. Wood... more »
