Jeld-Wen Interior Doors will close its Sunbury, Pa. manufacturing plant by March 31. The company is offering all employees the chance to transfer to its Pottsville, Pa. facility.

“Our Pottsville operation is benefiting from our experienced and well trained workforce. I’m very thankful that the transfer opportunities exist for our employees,” said Rick Michaels, general manager of the Jeld-Wen division in Sunbury. “But it’s still difficult to end operations here.”

Jeld-Wen cites the continuing decline in market conditions as the reason for the closure, as well as the opportunity to relocate employees to the nearby Pottsville facility. The company reports that 15 employees have already made the jump, with 31 also applying for a transfer. The Sunbury plant has been in operation since 1990. The plant employs 94 people.

“When economic conditions press companies to make tough decisions like shutting down a plant, it’s hardest on the employees and their families,” Michaels added. “But I anticipate that the jobs sustained in Pottsville will continue to have a positive affect here locally.”
