Masco Corp. reports it is closing the Milgard Windows & Doors operation west of Chicago in Aurora, Ill., over the next few months. The move comes "in response to the challenging economy and state of the new residential construction and remodeling industries," according to a statement from Kathleen Vokes, Masco communications director.

In a letter sent to customers, the window and door manufacturer says it will stop taking orders this coming Friday. The Masco statement says while the company is discontinuing manufacturing at the Illinois operation, it will maintain service personnel to stand by its warranty.

Based in Tacoma, Wash., Milgard continues to operate window and door manufacturing facilities in California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado and Utah.  It opened the Illinois facility in 1998.  Masco, Milgard's parent, states that approximately 90 employees are affected by the closing.

Some Milgard dealers in the Midwest reported that they have been told the manufacturer is pulling back and will no longer supply products to markets east of the Rockies. Vokes notes, however, the company will continue to service Midwestern markets that had been serviced by its Denver plant.  Milgard also plans to continue manufacturing product for the Texas market.
