Kentucky-based Millwork Products LLC is expanding its operations to North Carolina, opening Jenkins Millwork LLC as a wholly-owned subsidiary. The new operation has leased production facilities in Wilkesboro, N.C., with more than 48,000 square feet, and hopes to have more than 50 production, sales and office employees as the expansion proceeds.

Most of those workers will come from a Jeld-Wen Inc. pre-hanging facility, which closed in March, according to an article in the Wilke Journal-Patriot. The experienced staff and a local workforce is said to be a driving force in the decision to open the millwork business in North Carolina.

“The business models of Jenkins Millwork LLC and Millwork Products, LLC will be very similar,” says Bob Allen, Millworks Products president. “We are a medium size, privately-owned company seeking to partner with other like-minded operators to supply customers in the markets we serve. I’ve known several of the staff and customers for more than 30 years. We’re all going to work together really well.”

With one location in Paducah, Ky., Millwork Products pre-hangs door and distributes doors, windows, stair parts and mouldings. The company serves more than 370 lumber yards in Western Kentucky, Southeast Missouri, Southern Illinois, Southwest Indiana and Northwest Tennessee.

Sales and distribution of millwork products at Jenkins Millwork is expected to begin right away. The Wilkesboro operation will serve customers in the Carolinas, Tennessee and Virginia.

“I have the utmost respect for the quality of the North Carolina workforce," Allen states, "and I’m looking forward to the potential for growth that the comeback of the housing market offers.”

“We are pleased to welcome Jenkins Millwork LLC to Wilkesboro and Wilkes County," states Jeff Garstka of the Wilkes Economic Development Corp., which assisted Millwork Products in its search for a new location over the last several months. "This announcement is good news for our local economy as we continue to work towards creating jobs and investment in the county. The EDC looks forward to being a long-term partner with Jenkins Millwork LLC as it grows here locally. I want to thank Millwork Products LLC for their investment here with Jenkins Millwork and wish them great success.”

The Wilkes EDC notes that Millwork Products' Allen is no stranger to the North Carolina millwork industry. Beginning in 1974, he was a sales representative of a large millwork company in the Asheville. In 1984, he was promoted to manager of the Paducah, Ky., branch where he increased sales threefold in just six years, it is reported.

In 2002, Allen and local investors purchased the company now known as Millwork Products.  Since that time, the company has more than doubled the number of employees and sales.
