Despite Weak Market, AMD Show Sees New Products and New Exhibitors

Orlando, Fla.—"We just have to get through this,” said one distributor attending the annual exhibition and convention of the Association of Millwork Distributors last week. That attitude was shared by many, expressing quiet determination to hold on for now and get prepared for better times when they do return.

No one expects that time coming soon, and that was reflected in attendance, which was down to about 800, as well as some notable missing exhibitors. Steves & Sons, Therma Tru and Woodgrain Millwork were on hand for the show, but some of the largest door makers in North America chose not to exhibit at what is perhaps the premier event of the door industry.

The AMD exhibition still saw numerous product introductions and some new exhibitors as well. Among the notable new products was a multipoint astragal being shown by Endura Products. Shoot bolts into the header and sill are lever operated, noted the company’s Mark Fortun, while unique interlocking mechanisms create additional locking points between the door panel and astragal. “Multipoint is definitely still growing,” Fortun noted. “We wanted to bring it to an astragal type application.”

Imperial Products was showing a new door frame system incorporating MikronWood composite from its sister company, Mikron Industries. The composite framing is combined with a new package of installation products, including flashing, sealant and expandable foam from Henkel/OSI. The composite offers the resistance to the moisture and rot problems that have plagued wood door frame components, and is also prefinished and comes with a choice of snap-in trim.

G-M Wood Products was featuring an expanded line of door frame components, designed to enable pre-hangers to meet a variety of needs, while still ordering from one source and getting deliveries “all on the same truck,” according to Kevin Karrip, sales manager. The line includes ProEco jambs and other components to meet green building requirements, the Timbers Collection of premium stain-grade components, its Dura-Frame which uses Alaskan yellow cypress at the jamb bottoms for natural, rot-free performance, and the Dura-Plast composite line.

speakeasy from GlassCraft Door Co., designed for use in fiberglass doors.

NEW DOORS
New doors were also feagtured by a number of suppliers. Evermark, a supplier of door components and trim, featured a new line of high-end wood entry doors. Lynden Door was featuring a number of contemporary new flush door styles featuring a variety of new looks. Mitch Toews, the company’s marketing manager noted that the company has been expandning from its residential base to multi-family and commercial markets. “We saw an opportunity for design alternatives for flush doors,” he noted. The contemporary style increasingly appeals to appeals to urban dwellers, he added, and that is where the door maker sees more of the housing market going.

Also adding new design options was Simpson Door, which featured its new Artist Collection of decorative glass lites. The first series of limited edition designs, created by glass artist Mark Olson, are inspired by nature. Incorporating nonlinear shapes, people look twice and ask, “that’s a Simpson Door?” reported the company’s Brad Loveless. They are proving to be popular, however, he noted, also pointing out that a portion of the new line’s sales are going to support the arts through the International Child Arts Foundation.

Two door manufacturers made their debut at the AMD show also. Based in Everett, Wash., Talon Doors offers interior and exterior wood doors in a variety of styles, and was promoting the fact that it is now setting up a new facility in Georgia to supply the East Coast as well. Among the features of its product line are crossband veneers under the face veneers of its doors to provide added stability, and its Hydra-Seal osmotic water barrier applied to the bottom of its exterior doors for resistance to mold, fungus and insects. Door Works Co., a producer of MDF doors, also showcased its line for the first time at AMD in Florida. The company is unique in manufacturing all doors to order, noted the company’s Tom Fody.

AMD itself was also busy at the Florida event, as it is making plans to launch an initiative to expand membership. Other activities within the association include an effort to bring its educational and training programs online. Next year, AMD brings its convention and exhibition to San Antonio.
