    THE TALK...

Admit it... are you spending money?

We're supposed to be stuffing $100 bills in our mattresses and stocking up on cans of beans and evaporated milk (or was it red wine?) to be stored in the basement, but my husband and I are spending money. Not a lot, mind you—I'm not that brave. I spent this past weekend ripping up the floor in my bathroom and dismantling a vanity that's likely older than my dad. And here's the ... more »

    Are You Stimulated?

Okay, we've been hearing lots from you about the new tax credits for energy efficient windows and doors. Last week, we asked for a straight up-and-down vote from readers on whether they approved of the new 30/30 standards or disapproved and thought they should be changed. This week, I'd like to hear whether or not they're having the stimulative effect desired.  So our poll question ... more »

Are You Looking for New Vendors?

"The word is out and it's amazing how the phone is just ringing off the hook!" That's what one manufacturer that offers windows qualifying for the new tax credit recently told me. One glass supplier also reported a significant uptick in window manufacturer inquiries into its higher-performance low-E products. With the new tax credit requirements, our company:Is ready to go with ... more »

Would a stronger industry lobbying effort be beneficial?

In Tucson last week, the Window & Door Manufacturers Association outlined plans to get its members' voices heard in Washington. Given the industry grumbling about the last minute shift in window, door and skylight tax incentive requirements in the stimulus bill, I suspect some wish our industry’s presence was already stronger there.Would a stronger industry lobbying effort be ... more »
  • Will the economic stimulus package help the industry?

Leaving all the politics aside, President Obama's economic stimulus package has, in my opinion, some pretty decent provisions for the window and door industry. Could it be more? Sure. But it's certainly better than the menial incentives we've had for energy efficiency upgrades in the last few years.I think the economic stimulus bill will impact the window and door industry:Positively—the ... more »

How big will opening glass walls get?

The past two weeks, I’ve been talking to hardware suppliers. One trend we’ve talked about is the apparent explosion in wide-opening sliding and folding door systems. More manufacturers are offering these products—I think I counted at least 30 at the recent Builders’ Show—so presumably demand is growing.Wide-opening door systems will be:Limited to ultra-high end ... more »

When do you expect to see sales growth at your company?

Last week, a reader of WDweekly wrote to say “We’ve stopped reading it because every week is full of gloom and doom.” I certainly understand the perspective. I’ve been tempted to turn off the TV every time the latest news from the economic front comes on.When do you expect to see sales growth at your company?Sales are increasing now.In the next 3 months.3 to 6 months6 ... more »

What do dealers do if their manufacturer closes?

For a punch in the gut, check this out. Jordan Windows & Doors closed this week and left this to-the-point message on its Web site. It says, "We are sorry for the inconvenience but Jordan Company (Jordan Windows and Doors) is no longer in business." That's it. No additional information.Who should take the bulk of the responsibility for displaced dealers? The manufacturer going out ... more »

What are the hidden costs of the housing crisis?

I think the ripple effects of the current housing crisis are too numerous and vast to quantify at the moment. I’m sure we’ll be able to wrap our brains around it years from now, but as we sit in the eye of the storm, it’s tough to keep track of all the possible avenues of fallout from the current financial and housing predicament. How long will it take for us to fully ... more »
