When do you expect to see sales growth at your company?

Last week, a reader of WDweekly wrote to say “We’ve stopped reading it because every week is full of gloom and doom.” I certainly understand the perspective. I’ve been tempted to turn off the TV every time the latest news from the economic front comes on.When do you expect to see sales growth at your company?Sales are increasing now.In the next 3 months.3 to 6 months6 ... more »

What do dealers do if their manufacturer closes?

For a punch in the gut, check this out. Jordan Windows & Doors closed this week and left this to-the-point message on its Web site. It says, "We are sorry for the inconvenience but Jordan Company (Jordan Windows and Doors) is no longer in business." That's it. No additional information.Who should take the bulk of the responsibility for displaced dealers? The manufacturer going out ... more »

What are the hidden costs of the housing crisis?

I think the ripple effects of the current housing crisis are too numerous and vast to quantify at the moment. I’m sure we’ll be able to wrap our brains around it years from now, but as we sit in the eye of the storm, it’s tough to keep track of all the possible avenues of fallout from the current financial and housing predicament. How long will it take for us to fully ... more »

How do you think IBS will be different this year?

Next week is the International Builders' Show. Not surprisingly, as home sales have declined in recent years, so has attendance at this show. One thing I've noted in recent years, however, is that exhibitors and attendees have maintained a relatively positive attitude. Traffic was down at the past two shows in Orlando, but there was little talk of "doom and gloom."How do you think ... more »

What kind of economic stimulus would you like to see?

President-elect Obama rolled into Washington this week and all the talk there seems to be focusing on an economic stimulus package. One group trying to make its voice heard is the Fix Housing First Coalition, representing builders and many other companies and groups (including AAMA). It is looking to expand on tax incentives for homebuyers, among other things. What kind of economic ... more »

What was the biggest industry story of 2008?

I join you for the last "Talk..." of 2008. John and I have truly enjoyed having this avenue for dialog with you this year. This little box is honestly one of our favorite weekly tasks because it forces us to come up with topics of conversation that are pertinent to our industry. And usually we can get enough of you fired up to give us some good feedback. Keep those responses coming ... more »

Would you bail on the auto makers?

So I'll admit I'm probably not the best person from which you should solicit an opinion regarding the Big Three auto makers and the current bailout banter. The Ford I've owned for one year dropped a transmission last week so I'm a little bitter at the moment. We'll save that story for another Talk...Should President Bush issue a bailout to U.S. auto makers?YesNo If poll form doesn't work in ... more »

    The Republic Story will...

The Republic factory sit-in is “the start of a movement,” Rep. Jan Schakowsky, an Illinois Democrat, told the Associated Press, adding "This story has resonated around the world." Even President-elect Obama weighed in on the situation. In covering the window and door business for 25 years, I’ve never seen an industry-related story attract so much national media ... more »

It’s nice to see positive numbers for a change. How black will your Black Friday be?

Ladies and gentlemen, this is my favorite holiday of the year. And no, I'm not talking turkey and football and pies. I'm talking shopping—it's almost Black Friday! Hey, I'm as thankful as the next person, but my female family members and I have made an even better holiday tradition than calorie consumption out of getting up at wickedly early hours and rushing off to stand in line at some ... more »
