Win-Door to Set Stage for Strong 2011

With healthy Canadian market, CWDMA expects a busy trade show in November

With more than 150 exhibitors signed up, Win-Door North America is once again expected to be busy when it opens its doors next week. Set for the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, November 16-18, the annual Canadian Window & Door Manufacturers Association event will serve as a major showcase for Canadian and U.S. industry suppliers.

Canadian extruders like P.H. Tech traditionally bring some of the largest displays to Win-Door.

"The Canadian construction market, especially as it pertains to the remodeling industry, has remained strong and this bodes well for an exciting and enthusiastic event for attendees, as well as the exhibitors," says Matt Kottke of Truth Hardware, who chairs CWDMA's show committee.  "2011 is setting up to be a strong year and window and door manufacturers looking to capitalize on this will be looking for new products and services to help them differentiate themselves. Win-Door will provide that venue."

Last year, Win-Door celebrated its 15th anniversary, with CWDMA marking the occasion by honoring pioneers of the Canadian window and door industry.  While market weakness was evident in the show itself, with numerous exhibitors featuring smaller displays, it continued to feature numerous product introductions, including a fiberglass door line at Tru Tech Doors and a vinyl door frame system from Window City.

This year's list of exhibitors once again features a broad mix of suppliers, including a strong contingent of door and door component manufacturers, including  Dusco Doors, Masonite, Mastergrain, Novatech, ODL, Therma Tru and Tru Tech. On the window side, the list includes vinyl extruders such as P.H. Tech,  Soniplastics and Veka, but also numerous hardware manufacturers, including Amesbury, Ashland and Truth.  Suppliers of other components, as well as equipment and software, fill out the list.

One new feature this year is a dual online and in-person New Product Showcase. New high-strength adhesives, polymers and foam tapes, innovative door lites, patio door entry systems, computer software, hybrid windows, sealing equipment and a junior CNC machine are among the entries to date. Also of note this year, Royal Building Products will be offering Win-Door attendees a chance to win a hockey prize package, including two tickets to a February Maple Leafs game, accommodations and tickets to the Hockey Hall of Fame. Visitors at the show can stop by the Royal booth to enter.

The Toronto event usually features numerous machines in action.

Educational Opportunities
The trade show wil be accompanied by a variety of educational opportunities targeted at window and door manufacturers, free for show attendees. The event's headline speaker is Bob Langdon, a CPA and author. He will offer two presentations, developed to help attendees to design and implement strategies that will not only allow them to differentiate themselves in today’s competitive market, but improve profitability as well.

Jeff Baker, CWDMA technical consultant, will offer update on new code requirements, NAFS testing requirements for doors, and upcoming changes in the building code and NAFS that window manufacturers will need to meet to achieve compliance with the new building code. In another session, Steve Hopwood, Energy Star account manager for Natural Resources Canada, will examine what’s new in the latest Canadian criteria and take a look into the future to outline possible changes for the future. Finally, Miles Murphy, standards product manager for the Canadian Standards Association will outline the development of the first Canadian program to certify installers of windows, doors and skylights nationally.

Rounding out the seminar program will be an update of CWDMA activitities, as well as a forecast from Peter Norman of Altus Group Economics. Norman's discussion will include both an economic and demographic analysis, as well as a look at the outlook for construction and building products.

"Win-Door really covers all aspects of business," says Kottke.  "Not only does it deliver the newest products, applications and technology, but Win-Door backs it up with really useful information on everything from reshaping ones business after the recession to staying in step with the latest government regulations and guidelines."

The Win-Door show is open Tuesday, November 16, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Wednesday, November 17, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Thursday, November 18, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. More information on presentations and CWDMA activities, as well as hotel and registration information for the event, is available at
