Useful Apps for Industry Businesses

We now live in a world of smartphones and tablets. Sure, laptops still get plenty of use and desktop computers are still hanging around, although sales dropped a full 10 percent in 2014.

But, by and large, people want portability in their computing. Whether the device of choice is a tablet, smartphone or even a smartwatch, most people have gotten used to using apps for many personal needs. But I’ve also found that several apps can be helpful to owners of local businesses, particularly in the window and door industry.

Here are a few I recommend (note: I have no commercial or promotional affiliation with any of these products):

Splashtop: This app makes it easy to remotely access computers, applications and files from a variety of devices and operating systems (including Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Kindle and Blackberry). You can select which employees have access to which systems/materials and determine the levels of access they have.

Locqus: This app provides an easy way to track window and door installation personnel, and to dispatch and schedule jobs. It is GPS-based and allows users to create jobs and assign them to installers in the field, view reports, do mobile invoicing and accept payments. Employees can also clock in and out through the app.

ABBYY Card Reader: This is one of the easiest ways to scan business cards into a database to keep track of leads and business contacts. The recognition software automatically puts the data into the proper fields (name, company name, phone, email address, etc.). In addition to working with Windows, Android, iOS and Windows Phone, it has a Salesforce option for directly inputting information into the Salesforce CRM system.

Dropbox: It may be a bit obvious, but Dropbox’s incredible convenience makes it worth a mention. The app provides a simple way to share documents, files, photos, videos and much more with everyone on your team no matter where they are. It’s also free for an impressive amount of cloud storage and has support for Windows, Android, iOS, Mac and Linux.

Do you find apps to be helpful to your business? Which ones are you using for your business? Take this week’s poll, post a comment and/or email me your thoughts.
