More companies in remodeling and replacement channel...

Speaking at the Home Improvement Research Institute’s spring conference last week, Kermit Baker, director of the remodeling futures program at the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University, suggested that remodelers can do better in these difficult economic times by becoming specialized in a certain area of home improvement. “You look like a bigger player if you’re servicing a niche,” he said.

Tough times or not, I’ve certainly seen examples of remodelers and home improvement dealers deciding to specialize in windows and doors. I can also point to window and door specialists who have branched out to siding, sunrooms, decking, fencing and more. For the market as a whole, I don’t know which way the pendulum might be swinging.
