Solar Innovations Plant Earns LEED Certification

February 25, 2011

The U.S. Green Building Council has granted Solar Innovations official LEED Gold Certification for its 200,000-square-foot corporate headquarters and manufacturing facility in Pine Grove, Pa.  After months of work, the manufacturer of residential and commercial windows, doors, sunrooms and skylights, received 62 points towards the LEED-EB:OM v2009 Certification allowing it to receive the gold status, officials report.

The LEED Existing Buildings Certification program is based on company facility and occupant energy efficiency, sustainable choices, waste stream, and many other categories. It highlights chemical usage, recycling, composting, material usage, emissions data, and many more green avenues. Solar Innovations' LEED team compiled the required data and implemented required programs to improve the company's green efforts, as well as to provide quantifiable documentation for Green Building Certification Institute.

Solar Innovations has future plans for the building which will allow it to achieve Platinum certification in the next two years by providing 40 percent of the company's energy usage through the first phase of the solar photovoltaic system, officials note. The installation of 250kw of solar panels has begun, which will be the first phase of a planned 1mw system. A solar thermal system has also been added to the building to provide domestic hot water to the office building and on-site greenhouse.

In addition to getting its own facility LEED certified, Solar Innovations employs several LEED credentialed professionals to assist customers with LEED projects, as well as products which can aid companies in achieving their LEED goals, executives note.
