Veka Inc. announced the passing of Charles Lawrence Irwin, its first president and CEO, on Sept. 11, 2024. A Western Pennsylvania native, Irwin was residing in Kiawah Island, South Carolina.
A visionary in the vinyl extrusion industry, Irwin introduced polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, extrusion technology to the United States. His leadership saw Veka grow significantly from the late 1980s through the early 2000s, marked by his dedication and strategic insight.
Irwin served as president from 1985 to 2002 at the Fombell, Pennsylvania, headquarters. He oversaw the construction of the state-of-the-art Western Pennsylvania facility in 1986, which grew to 700,000 square feet. His vision also led to the establishment of Veka West in 1995, expanding as the PVC market surged.
By his final year as president, Veka North America achieved over $110 million in net sales, a sharp rise from $643,000 in 1986. His legacy is evident in these numbers and the growth and innovation that defined his tenure.
He is survived by his son, Charles (Gail) Irwin; daughter, Alison Lally; grandchildren, Casey (Clem) Newcamp, Andrew Irwin, Garrett Lally, Shea Lally; and three great-grandchildren, Sage, Ember, and Flora Newcamp. Memorials may be made to ASPCA, St. Judes Hospital, or Tunnel 2 Towers.
"Larry’s influence extended beyond the company, shaping an industry and inspiring countless individuals. He is remembered with respect and admiration by those who worked with him," says Veka in a post released online. "We offer our heartfelt condolences to all who loved him. Larry's contributions will be cherished, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations at Veka."
