WDMA Releases 2021 U.S. Industry Market Study

Total residential units shipped (windows, patio doors, entry doors) were up by 1 million over the level in 2019, according to the Window & Door Manufacturers Association's newly released WDMA 2021 U.S. Market Study for Window & Patio Door, Architectural and Entry Doors. The report, which provides market data and consumer insights, is based on extensive industry input for product shipments in 2020 and was prepared, researched and analyzed by The Farnsworth Group. In addition to analyzing the manufacturing data, the Farnsworth Group also conducted additional research to combine industry driver data and housing market data to benchmark and forecast product shipments. 
 
The 2021 market study report includes an analysis of the attitudinal drivers of homeowners and contractors, key macro drivers in the residential and commercial markets and a special section focusing on the impact the pandemic had on new construction and the remodeling marketplace during 2020. This report delivers information about residential/light commercial window, patio door, residential entry door and interior architectural door market trends and product relationships; regional data, historic data from 2018 to 2019, and forecast data for 2021 through 2023. 
 
Other quick facts and key takeaways include:

  • Though shipments of architectural interior flush door leaves declined by 9.7 percent in 2020, shipments of architectural interior stile and rail door leaves grew 2.8 percent.
  • Window shipments saw moderate growth in 2020 (particularly in Q3 & Q4) whereas sliding patio and hinged patio doors declined. Entry doors saw a 4 percent increase over the levels in 2019.
  • Housing starts (new construction) in 2020 were up 7 percent over new starts in 2019 and are trending toward the 60-year average of 1.43 million starts that have not been achieved since 2006.
